Fundamental Soil and Plant Nutrition
In this course, we cover the fundamentals of soil science and plant nutrition. We give an overview of soil: how soil is formed and its main properties and functions.
We explore the diverse nature of soil and identify key features that can be used to classify and describe it. We look at the key drivers impacting plant growth and soil’s role in this, particularly around nutrient supply.
At the end of this course, you will be able to identify a broad soil group, collect and process both a soil and plant sample for analyses, list key soil properties, and understand what information is required to submit samples and maintain records.
Understanding Soil and Plant Nutrition

In this course, we will support the practical application of skills and knowledge for understanding sampling limitations, provide information on critical benchmarks for a range of analytical methods, and step through how to read sample test reports.
We will give you a deeper understanding of some of the major cycles occurring within soil, with a particular focus on their impact on nutrient availability for crops.
We will highlight factors to consider when deciding if a soil is fit for purpose, and list common ways to assess this.
